Warsaw Water supply and waste water treatment project gets EU financing
Danuta Hübner, European Commissioner for Regional Policy, has signed the Commission Decision granting financial assistance to the project "Warsaw water supply and waste water treatment". The total cost of the project is estimated at 405 million € with a Community contribution of 248 million €. The project will improve the quality of drinking water and will also contribute to the considerable improvement in the health of local citizens.
This project, which is the third phase of the long term plan to improve
Warsaw water supply and waste water treatment, will be one of the largest EU
projects to be approved under the Cohesion Fund in 2005 and is the first of 23
projects to be approved before the end of this year, for Poland.
The project, located in Warsaw, Pruszków and Wieliszew is of major importance
for Poland and especially for the citizens of Mazowieckie region. The primary
objective is the reduction of emission of municipal wastewater to the
environment, in this particular case to the Vistula river.
The project will improve the quality of drinking water, while in parallel
reducing the costs of surface water treatment and allowing a positive impact on
the Baltic fishery industry. The improved drinking water quality will also
contribute to considerable improvement in the health of local citizens.
The project will allow the treatment of wastewater from the central and
northern left bank part of the city, meaning the wastewater effluent discharged
from the Czajka wastewater treatment plant will reach good quality standards and
achieve the standards and norms specified in European Union Directives. In
addition it will provide a long-term method of wastewater sludge
management. The Warsaw project is part of a longer term strategic development
plan of the City of Warsaw and it plays a key role in the sustainable
development of the capital of Poland.
